Sleep again

For about a week and a half Evelyn started waking up at night, some nights after only a few hours of sleep. As you can imagine, I wasn’t too excited about this development. She did go through a growth spurt and I think that was part of it, but I finally figured out that she was getting cold at night. Because it’s warm during the day the heat isn’t on in our building (remember most apartments in central Mtl don’t have thermostats so the heat is “on” or “off”). It was getting quite cool at night and even with the windows closed Evelyn still needed a few more layers. One night last week she had socks, pants, a diaper, a one piece bodysuit, a shirt, pyjamas _and_ her sleep sac. But tonight is quite warm and she’s only wearing pyjamas and the sleep sac. Since I made this discovery I have been adding extra layers on cooler nights and she has gone back to sleeping 9 hours +. Bliss.

Evelyn is close to learning how to crawl. She lifts up her chest with her arms and has lifted her hips up with her legs very briefly. She can spin around and pull herself across the floor a bit. She’s smiles a lot and really enjoys when we show her things. She laughs a lot too! She is really attached to her toy plush carrot and even wants to hold it when she goes to bed! I have to take it out of the crib after she’s asleep. Good thing we have three of them – that way I can wash one and still have one around the house and one in the diaper bag.

She will start eating “solid” food soon, starting with rice cereal. I have made a ridiculous amount of pureed fruits and vegetables for her. I wanted to buy them while they were in season at the market. So far I have made peaches, pears, apricots, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, broccoli, asparagus, carrots, green beans, peas, zuchini and pumpkin. I am still planning to make eggplant and sweet potatoes and at some point I would like to make cauliflower and white potatoes too. They are all in the freezer waiting to be eaten. It was quite easy except for the asparagus. The asparagus at the market had very thin stalks and I didn’t realise until I started making them that I had to peel the stalks! It took ages and I think I removed about half the volume just by peeling them.
