Yesterday marked 1 month since Evie arrived. This month went very fast. Evie is much more alert during the day now and still doesn’t like to be set down alone. I am trying to give her at least one time “alone” in the bassinet each day so she will be a bit used to it when it’s time for her to sleep alone (which we will have to introduce gradually, I think). The cosleeping is still working well and it seems to be teaching her that night time is for sleep, since she will go 3-4 hours before wanting to eat at night (compared to 1 1/2 or less during the day!). She is very vocal and makes the cutest cooing sounds when she isn’t crying, and even her cries sound more like “talking”. She is also ridiculously tall and is fitting clothing that is supposed to be for babies double her weight, which are much too long in the legs/sleeves. Neither Dan or I are very tall, but Dan’s uncles are tall and so was my grandfather, so she must have got that from way back. And best of all, she is smiling when she looks at us!
The weather was miserable this week and I had been putting off giving her a bath because the heat was off in our place which made it very chilly. But yesterday she was feeling very sticky and I decided we couldn’t wait any longer. I had a shower to warm the bathroom up, then put some warm water in the tub to keep it warm and gave her a bath in her tub in the bathtub wearing my bathing suit. Fortunately the heat was turned on again later in the day! A pox on the cheap contractors who made Montreal apartments without thermostats!
Gwen, Evie and I went to Shaika cafe for lunch and I had a ham, mango, avocado and goat cheese sandwich. We had to bundle her up in winter clothing including her hat which was way too large (since I bought one sized for a 9 month old). But it worked. For supper we made artichokes with almond sauce and trout (cooked according to a recipe from La Bonne Cuisine). We also had some donuts from the Polish bakery, which Lisa introduced us to last year.
Dan’s mom leaves tonight. Having her here has been such a blessing – we wouldn’t have made it without her help. Tomorrow she will be visiting her other new grandchild Zoe!

Karen! I can’t believe a month has gone by; I have been thinking of you every day. I am so happy to see your beautiful daughter; I had my ultrasound on Thursday and we are having exactly what we expected: a girl as well (I chart my ovulation, so we’ve always known, much to my parents disappointment – ha!)! I’m sorry the labour was such a harrowing experience, but we can never predict those things, and she’s here, and healthy! Maybe someday our daughters will play together.
Stay strong & healthy, your email friend in ÃŽle-Perrot,
Leilani
