On Tuesday evening I returned from work to find two guys intalling pipes in our ceiling. There was a massive hole in the living room ceiling, another one in the bedroom, and a great big one in the wall in bathroom. Apparently the building is so crooked that the water wasn’t draining and wall all pooling up over our apartment. They re-did the roof Wednesday and had to install this drain pipe right away, so nobody could give us any notice. Our place was an absolute mess and they left a box of pipes and two ladders in the apartment overnight, so we stayed at Dave and Sanan’s house Wed and Thurs night. The floor was covered with grit from the drywall, dirt, and tar (the tar leaked through the hole where they installed the drain). Aparently WD-40 does a pretty good job of cleaning tar off hardwood floors since the guy was able to get the big puddle of it off, but there are tar smears everywhere and frankly I’m not going to bother with that. The mice were quite scared too, but surprisingly haven’t gotten sick (yet) from all the dust. Needless to say it has been a very disruptive week and we’ve been out of touch because of it. Last night we spent several hours cleaning (the floors were swept, mopped, vacuumed and then washed with a rag and are now mostly clean except the aforementioned tar marks). Thankfully they covered all our stuff with plastic dropcloths, but even still the drit got under and we had to clean off everything byDan’s desk and his keyboard.
The holes are still there, as the drywallers are coming next week to patch them up, which we expect will probably be quite messy again. It also will need painting and I don’t know when that’s happening yet. Oh did I mention this permanently installed pipe isn’t inside the ceiling but actually running just below it in the bedroom, hall and bathroom? They have to cover it with some sort of wood or drywall, which is going to look kust spiffy, I’m sure. What did I tell you – we’re hapless!
