Aww. Keiko’s big shoulder scratch (gouge is more like it) must have been infected, as there is a big bump on her shoulder under it now. I’m quite certain it’s an abcess and the options for dealing with it are somewhat limited. I decided to take her to the vet and get some advice. There’s a nice vet on Sherbrooke for “exotic” animals and birds, including mices. The vet prescribed some antibiotics and probiotics (not ours, another brand) and gave me a quote for surgery should the antibiotics not work. Just seeing the vet and getting the meds was $77 (may I remind you Keiko cost $3.00 – ouch) and the surgery is about $150 but isn’t likely to succeed, so that’s definately out. I’ve been using a 1cc syringe to feed the antibiotics and probiotics to her twice a day. There’s a lot of squeeking and struggling (Keiko), swearing (me) and pawing at the syringe (Keiko) but I eventually do manage to get it in her mouth. After its all done, I put the medicine away and hold out my hand – as always, she hops on and looks at me as if she’s asking “Ok, what’s next?” which is what makes her the friendliest mouse ever. I’ve been doing this since Monday and there is no change so far. Worse, she keeps scratching the scab with her foot so it won’t even heal! Darn mice. If these antibiotics don’t work, then the only options will be to leave it (it will probably kill her in time when it becomes systemic), attempt the surgery myself (I have no anaesthetic so I think this would be both risky and mean) or put her down. None of these are really appealing as the best choice right now.
I think next time I’ll get some fish.

I took care of a pneumoniac rat for a week a while ago, same vet, same 1ml syringe (0.02 ml of one of the antibiotics). Same routine. Apostrophe would struggle mightily, but eventually the goo would go in her mouth (good thing rats can’t puke). The good news is now she’s breathing much better: still a little skinny, but her owner (and I, occasionally) are working on fattening her up.
I hope Keiko responds positively as well. Good luck!

Darn animals, they do manage to get themselves into bad situations, don’t they?
Good luck with Keiko, I hope her shoulder clears up soon.
