The story of DJ Krush, Gretchen and Keiko

For phtos, go to the Miceoween Album

Form my birthday this year I decided to be a little impulsive. As most of you know I almost always get clothing with the money that I receive for my birthday and this was my plan once again this year. Sure it isn’t very original, but practical. Our friend Joseph mentioned that DJ Krush is coming to Montreal next weekend and that there are tickets for sale. I have never been to a concert before so I decided “why not?” and we bought tickets! The concert was ok, but for someone who does turn-tabling, he sure didn’t do much scratching. It was still fun to go.

I had been thinking about getting a pet for a while (not a cat or dog obviously since I am allergic to them) but something like a bird or fish. My friend Edith has a pet mouse (M. Souris or “Mr Mouse”) and the more she told me about her mouse the more I was interested. I still wanted to get a small colourful finch but I was worried about the cost and upkeep of a bird, plus the fact that they can live for 5-10 years and that is a big committment. This Friday I was at another friend’s house for thanksgiving and Edith was talking about her mouse and all of a sudden I realised “Hey I can afford to get a pet!! I’ll get a mouse!” We got home at about 1:30 that evening and I researched pet mice on the internet for about a hour and decided to sleep on it. The next day we called some pet stores to see who had mice for sale and ended up going to one downtown. We checked out the mice and picked our a black one and a cream-coloured one (not white, a bit darker) and were able to get the mice, a cage, bedding, food, and a water thing for about $50. I took them home on the bus and I could tell they weren’t too happy about being in a box on a noisy bus. When I got home I put their cage together and set it up. They kept trying to jump out of the box while I was doing this but when I put them in the cage they were very excited and started running everywhere and smelling everything.

So far they seem quite content in their new home, and very curious when I give them something to play with (or smell). I put a tea tin with tissue paper in the cage and they took out all the tissue paper and made a bed behind the tin already.

We bought two female mice so we are calling them Gretchen (which is German and means “little pearl” which is perfect for the cream coloured one since her colour is pearly) and Keiko which is Japanese for “adored one”.

I was also able to buy a new change purse (the one I had broke), some oolong tea, and some very nice plants. When I told Edith that I bought some mice she gave me a “mouse ball” (a plastic ball you can put a mouse in to let them roll around the house) which is going to be fun when I get the mice tamed.

Dan also bought me some very nice presents. He bought me lemon jam (I love the stuff) and Chantilly raspberry cookies. We were in the new Ten Thousand Villages (which recently opened up on Monkland ave) about 3 weeks ago and saw a gorgeous pillow for our couch. We thought about buying it but didn’t get it then. Dan bought it for my birthday and I think it looks beautiful with our couch.

All in all, I have to say I got some kick-ass birthday presents this year! Thanks Dan, the Hagens, and Mom and Dad!
